Scenario
Your gym class is playing basketball when a student jumps to block a shot and comes down awkwardly on one leg and falls down. As you approach the child you notice a deformity to the right ankle.
Strains, Sprains, and Fractures
Step 1: Activation and Assessment
- Tell someone to call 911; due to recognition of deformity of ankle, activation is indicated.
- Advise student not to move the affected leg.
- Carefully remove shoe.
- Check pulse and color in foot to assure circulation.
Step 2: Stabilization and Observation
- Manually stabilize foot and ankle in the position found.
- If available, surround the foot and ankle with a blanket or pillow and secure with tape.
- After it is secured, recheck the pulse and color in foot to assure circulation is good.
- Observe victim for shock-like symptoms which include pale sweaty skin, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
